What is Modern Art?
Modern means ‘of recent times or of present era’; and art can be termed as any creative or innovative piece of work used to express someone’s inner feelings. Modern art is said to be the Art from the Impressionists from around 1880’s up till the 1960′s or 70′s. The word modern art itself says that it is an art that include artistic creations fashioned in the course of the period stretching approximately from the 1860s to the 1970s. Modern art stands for the philosophy and style of the art produced throughout that epoch.
Examples of Modern Art
In layman’s words, modern art can be defined as any art created in past or any creation of history. But modern art is a term that is usually connected with the art in which traditions of history have been pulled aside in the strength of carrying out experiments.
Modern art was initiated by many traditional painters like Paul Cezanne, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, George Seurat and Henri de Toulouse Lautrec. All these formed to be the important pillars in the development of modern art. Modern art generally consists of mixtures movements and different styles of art.
Modern art can be expressed as an essential and swift form of art style with different variations. Modern art entered United States in 1913 with the Armory show and also through European artists who shifted to United States during World War I.
Now-a-days, due to more and more development in technology; there is also a change in people’s perception towards art. In ancient times, artists used to create art work as they were commissioned by wealthy families and churches, but now, artists produce art work for leisure. Though there are still many artists who present the touch of modern art in their paintings. Earlier, artists thought of offering long lasting solutions to all the worldly problems through their paintings and art work. Canvas art can also be used as a medium for displaying modern art works.
Modern art has its own styles which tend to differ from other forms of art. The styles include:-
- Expressionism
- Impressionism
- Cubism
- Pop Art (known as Popular Culture)
- Formalism
- Surrealism
- Abstract Expressionism
The ideas and thoughts of modern art are closely in relation with the modernism. Modern art is the notion of grasping the real meaning of the thing portrayed.
It is said that Modern Art embarked on with:
- Romanticism,
- Realism,
- Daguerre’s announcement,
- The writer Baudelaire,
- The first Impressionist exhibition in 1874.
In short, modern art can be termed as the point of time at which artists felt free to have faith in their inner visions and put across their visions in the mode of art. It is often easier to describe your feeling through art instead of using words. Hence, modern art is a very sacred creation left by the ancient artists to express their thoughts during their entire life time.
Thus, artist producing modern art has various mediums to communicate their feelings, namely, paintings, drawings, photography, performance art, print, architecture, etc.
