So you’ve found a magnificent scene, your eyes have travelled all over it and have been drawn in by a few appealing elements. Surrounded by natural beauty you think the photo will take care of itself. Wrong.
Although landscape photography is one of the most popular photographic genres it is easy for images to look bland and lifeless. Lenses, sensors or film cannot filter out unwanted detail; they need a little help. So, whether you want iconic prints of urban life or a more traditional landscape, here are a few ideas to ensure that your photo has the edge.
Let there be light
Unless you want your image looking like it would be appropriate in a tourist’s photo album, pay attention to light. Many photographers never shoot during the day; preferring the golden hours of dusk and dawn. The light’s angles and differing shades can bring a landscape alive with a fusion of textures, patterns and dimensions.
Use a tripod
To ensure a clear shot when light is not in abundance, tripods keep the camera still during exposure. Also consider a cable or wireless shutter release mechanism for extra camera stability. If you do not have a tripod then improvise to maintain sharpness in your pictures.
Maximise your depth of field
The traditional approach to landscape photography tries to capture as much of the scene in focus as possible. You may wish to experiment with narrower depths of field, but generally a smaller aperture setting will mean a greater depth of field, and maybe the perfect print to turn into wall art.
The needle in the haystack
All shots need a focal point. Landscape photographs risk looking empty without something on which the eye can rest. Focal points could range from a building or structure, a striking tree, a rock formation or even a silhouette. In an urban landscape, small details can add to the atmosphere of the photo, so capturing the inconsequential alongside the monumental will tell a story in itself.
Sky high
Most landscapes will either have a dominant foreground or sky – unless you have one or the other your shot will end up being lacklustre. Consider enhancing skies either in post production or with the use of filters for maximum effect.
A different point of view
Get off the beaten track and tell a different story with your photo. Look for ways to explore the mood of your landscape; photograph from above and below. Explore the environment and experiment with different angles and you will find yourself with something truly unique and may even be good enough for a canvas print.
